"Why can’t people just sit and read books and be nice to each other?"

This Standard Poodle is a Reading Education Assistance Dog

Midnight proudly sports his Reading Education Assistance Dog bandana.

Midnight and Deb are very excited about the opportunity and the invitation to make a surprise appearance at YMCA Camp Ernst in Northern Kentucky for Family Camp over Labor Day weekend in 2013. In other therapy and reading visits, Midnight has worked with Ella the Wonder Cat, and Paddy O'Hare, a giant rabbit. They work through Therapy ARC and READing Paws in Nashville and Deb says they are awesome groups.

Midnight is a Standard Poodle, a breed that originated in Germany as a water retriever. One of the most popular breeds, Poodles come in three sizes (Toy, Miniature, Standard) and a variety of solid colors.

Midnight and his human partner, Deb, work in the Franklin Special School District at Liberty Elementary School. When Midnight arrives at school, he prances down the hallway right to the library, eager to see "his kids." During their first year they worked with 8 students, and the next year they had 9.

Midnight has a special connection with each of his kids. All of their teachers and parents mentioned how these children have gained confidence, are eager to come to school on their Read With Midnight day, and how much their reading has improved.

Midnight is a great listener and a mellow teacher. Deb says he's changed the attitudes of his kids who were scared of dogs . . . period, has connected with an autistic child, and had improved the behavior of a child who came to school with a long "rap sheet." He's a superstar at school, and even many children who are not in the reading program say "Hi, Midnight!" when they see him. He just smiles in his special way and heads to the library. Deb and Midnight have also visited several libraries in the Nashville area, so Midnight is very "well read."

A busy team, Midnight and Deb are also involved in Lovie's Legacy, working with Boys & Girls Clubs, Boy & Girl Scouts, and the Nashville Metro Schools. They enjoy teaching youngsters the importance of compassionate, responsible ownership of a dog or any animal.
