"It's funny how dogs and cats know the inside of folks better than other folks do."

All-Around READing Dogs
Kansas ~ "Joey" & "Sidney"

This registered therapy animal is a Maine Coon Cat.

Sidney shows how calm cats can be.

Yes, this Reading Education Assistance Dogs® team member is actually a cat! Sidney is a Maine Coon cat. Maine Coons are the largest breed of domestic cat. They sometimes weigh up to 25 pounds, and the largest Maine Coon on record was 49 inches long. They have medium long, dense fur, and are noted for their intelligence and playfulness as well as their distinctive beauty. Because of the longer fur or ruff at the chest, similar to a lion’s mane, they are sometimes humourously called a “Mane Coon.” The Maine is also known as “the gentle giant” of the cat world.

Sidney is a Maine Coon Cat that listens to children read.

"Time spent with cats is never wasted."
 - Colette

Maine Coon cats are especially good with children and dogs. Although most often at the local libraries, Sidney also visits nursing homes and correctional facilities.

In 2010, gentle Sidney crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.

Joey is a Labrador Retriever/German Shepherd mix. Labrador Retrievers are one of the main breeds selected for guide and for search-and-rescue work. They are intelligent dogs said to have “kind,” friendly eyes expressing character and a good temperament. German Shepherds are often used as police dogs, service dogs, agility dogs, conformation animals, obedience dogs, and sentinels. Their high trainability and extreme loyalty and commitment make them an excellent choice for any agenda.

This Labrador Retriever-German Shepherd mix is listening to children read to him.

Joey is a well-dressed member of this READ team.

Joey is a great example of the best of both breeds. He regularly visits libraries and elementary schools as well as nursing homes and correctional facilities.

In mid-December 2012 sweet Joey joined Sidney over the Rainbow Bridge.
