"Children should learn that reading is pleasure,
not just something that teachers make you do in school."
~ Beverly Cleary

All-Around READing Dogs
Illinois ~ "Lad," "Molly," & "Fred"

A pat from a child to Thorndyke, a golden retriever Reading Education Assistance Dog.

Children love meeting Molly,
and vice-versa.

Molly is a Collie that Debbie adopted from a collie rescue organization. She visits the library on Fridays and takes part in mini programs where Debbie talks about her and how to pet her properly and how she loves to visit with the kids. Molly also comes to the Pet Expo program, which Debbie coordinates.

As Lad did, Molly takes part in the Pet Expo that Debbie coordinates every April. At the Expo, organizations such as shelters, dog rescue organizations, search & rescue groups that find lost people with their trained dogs, and vet clinics provide information about their group to the public. Almost every year, a dog or cat from one of the visiting shelters is adopted into a new home as a result of this program.

Children love reading to this golden retriever.

Happy to be surrounded by children.
Fred happily relaxes.

Fred is a Yellow Labrador Retriever. He has taken over for Lad in the Paws to Read programs and also takes part in the Pet Expo. In addition, Fred has visited senior centers and schools for troubled children.

Beloved Lad crossed over the Rainbow Bridge in 2008.

Lad is a border collie mix that Debbie adopted from a local shelter. Border collies are known to have a lot of energy and are often referred to as dogs that “need a job.” Lad found his calling when he became a Delta Society therapy dog. Debbie started the Paws to Read program with Lad at Round Lake Library.

Ready to go to work, Lad looks proud of his
Delta Pet Partner attire.

They visited schools to promote library programs and reading, and they also went to the College of Lake County to talk about reading and therapy dogs.

This golden retriever is a therapy dog that helps children practice reading.

"Are you having a happy birthday, Lad?"

Lad never met a person he didn’t like. He loved visiting schools, the library, daycare centers, and story time in the park when the bookmobile came to town. A few months before Lad passed away, a birthday party was held for him complete with story time and some friends who brought gifts.

Fred seems to belistening to one reader,
looking forward to another.
