"I often feel sorry for people who don't read good books;
they are missing a chance to lead an extra life."
~ Scott Corbett

All-Around READing Dogs
California ~ "PJ" & Wilbur

This child is reading a book to PJ, a cross between a Labrador and a golden retriever.

PJ is listening to a great story.
Notice the child gently holding paw in hand with him!

A hard-working and tireless team, PJ and his owner, Nancy, visit Apple Valley Library, Mariana School (2 classes), Kaiser Hospital Pediatrics and Pediatric Oncology, and Camp Erin (a children's bereavement camp).  On PJ's very first visit to a perinatal preschool, a child who had never spoken before started talking to him.  He is truly thought of as an angel in fur!

PJ also used to visit a residential care facility and Mourning Star, a children's bereavement program; however, Wilbur, a yellow Lab and also a rescue dog, now goes to them with Nancy.

Wilbur, a yellow Lab, is a therapy dog working in libraries, schools, residential care facilities, and Camp Erin, a children's bereavement program.

Labradors such as Wilbur are known to be loyal
and great with children.

Like PJ, Wilbur is a willing, welcome volunteer, and he also helps out at Apple Valley Library and Mariana School.

Books about retrievers include:

Good Dog. Stay, by Anna Quindlen
Labrador on the Lawn, by Ben Baglio
Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog, by Ted Kerasote
She Came from Heaven, by Rosanne Pellicane
The Yellowest Yellow Lab, by Seneca Clark and Sandy Giardi

PJ is a black Labrador and Golden Retriever cross, and a very lucky one at that.  He was a rescue that was taken into his forever home when he was 11 months. Shelters often have difficulty finding families for dark-coated dogs. Whether due to superstition or to visions of black hair on light-colored clothes and furniture, many of these loveable dogs miss out on good homes and happy lives. PJ is a fine example of how a rescue dog can become a perfect companion.

Two years old in this picture, PJ has been doing therapy work since 2003.  The first 10 people who started the therapy group felt PJ was just perfect for the program and thought “PJ's Pals” would be the perfect name.

PJ seems to really enjoy the books by Stephen Huneck about a black Lab named Sally. Children also like them a lot because Sally looks so much like PJ. Click on the titles to learn more about each one:
